Riding a Motorcycle in Bangkok

Though there are millions of motorbikes on Bangkok's roads, Bangkok is not a motorcycle friendly city.

Traffic rules that are designed for low-powered mopeds are strictly enforced for all motorcycles, also for Big Bikes and Heavy Machines, in the inner city of Bangkok.

  • There is only one category of motorcycles and it covers all models from 50 cc to 1800 cc. No exceptions.
  • Motorcycles generally are not permitted to use Fly-Overs and Underpasses. Instead, they must cross intersections at ground-level through traffic lights. This makes riding a bike in Bangkok cumbersome and inefficient. It results in hundreds of bikes weaving their way to the front at every traffic light and bunching up until lights turn green.
  • Motorcycles are required to use only the left-most lane. The main part of any 3 or 4 lane road is off-limits to motorcycles. Interpretations of the law vary, but if you venture into the middle or God forbid the center-lane, expect to be pulled over by a cop.
  • All Tollways are off-limits to motorcycles.
  • All Inner-Lanes on main Through-Fares are off-limits to motorcycles; only Frontage-Roads may be used.

Bangkok to Kao Yai

BKK - Kao Yai - BKK (via Nong Chock, Prachinburi)

Make your way through Bangkok to Minburi.

Leave Minburi on Route 304, direction Chachoengsao. After about 20 km, left on 3841, then after a couple of kms right onto 3481. General direction Prachinburi. You might stay on Route 319 (North) or make your way through the fields north to Route 33. Your destination is the intersection (roundabout) of 33 with 3077, near King Naresuan Maharat Shrine.

Enter 3077 (north). After about 20 km you reach the Entrance of Kao Yai, and from there it is another 20 km ride ascending into the park until you reach an altitude of about 800 m, where the road intersects with 2090 in the middle of Kao Yai.

You now ride through Kao Yai 2090 to the north edge of Kao Yai.

The way back to Bangkok is best on 2090 and on a rural road that takes you past GRANMONTE VINERY and then for a fast ride onto Mittraphap Highway back to Saraburi and Bangkok.
